Study plan

The best ways to study for the ICBC knowledge test

You don’t need to pay anything to pass the knowledge test. The best plan uses ICBC’s free guide first, then practice tests to find your gaps. Here’s what each option is good for.

1. Learn to Drive Smart (best for: actually learning it)

ICBC says all knowledge test questions are based on this guide. It’s free: download it (in six languages), read it in ICBC’s app, print the chapters, or pick one up at a driver licensing office. Read chapters 1 to 8 properly; chapters 9 and 10 are reference. Chapter 3 (signs) and chapter 4 (rules of the road) are where most people lose marks.

2. ICBC’s practice knowledge test (best for: the official question style)

ICBC’s own practice test is free at practicetest.icbc.com, in the ICBC app, and in 7 languages. ICBC says its questions are based on the real test and you can take it as many times as you want. ICBC also has a road signs practice test there.

3. This site (best for: explanations and volume)

Our ICBC practice test draws 50 questions from a bank of 230, with the reason after every answer and the guide chapter to go back to. The road signs test drills just signs. We include B.C.’s new October 2026 learner and novice rules. We’re not ICBC and our questions aren’t the real ones.

4. Apps (best for: quick sessions on your phone)

ICBC’s free app has the practice test and the guide. If you try other apps, check they’re written for B.C. (not Ontario or the U.S.): speed defaults, flashing green lights and L/N rules are different here.

5. A driving school (best for: the road test, not the knowledge test)

You don’t need a school to pass the knowledge test. Where a school helps is behind the wheel, and an ICBC-approved GLP course taken during your L can take 6 months off your N stage if you’re under 25 and drive safely. Request quotes from local schools.

A simple two-week plan

  1. 1

    Days 1–7

Read one or two chapters of Learn to Drive Smart a day. Note every number: distances, speeds, times.

  2. 2

    Days 8–10

Take our full practice test daily. Reread the chapter for every question you miss.

  3. 3

    Days 11–12

Do the road signs test and ICBC’s signs practice until you get 100%.

  4. 4

    Days 13–14

Take ICBC’s practice test. When you score well above 80% on both, book the real test.
